From online video viewers to creators, and industry influencers, VidCon, the annual multi-genre online video conference gathered over 20,000 attendees at the Anaheim Convention Center this past weekend. The three-day event on June 23-June 25, brought together leading companies in entertainment, media, marketing, and technology including Netflix, Tumblr, Nickelodean and more. We were honored to be among those in attendance.
With the growing impact of Youtube, online video has become a massive cultural force, launching careers and communities and creations of all sort. VidCon exists as the largest gathering of people who love and are a part of this new culture. From experiencing virtual reality with Marriott and Samsung to learning the importance of evolving within the social landscape as storytellers with National Geographic, VidCon 2016 was filled with insightful panels, internet celebrities and leading content creators.
One of the stand-out moments from #VidCon2016 was National Geographic’s “Building A Successful Social Channel” from Director of Digital Video, James Williams. James shared how a 128 year-old brand continues to remain relevant as one of the most successful publishers in today’s media landscape by understanding the power of storytelling and continuing to evolve. From telling stories through GIFs, Nat Geo gets down with the best by testing everything, adapting voraciously and continuing to earn audience with every post.
The virtual reality presentation from Samsung and Marriott hotels was also a highlight, showcasing the VR ecosystem as one of the most powerful tools in creating an unforgettable and immersive story. Ultimately, #VidCon2016 created a memorable and engaging experience that provided us at 1620 Media, and those in attendance, with new ideas and insights in the social media space.
